How We Use RSS at the Evangelical Free Church
RSS (most commonly translated as "Really Simple Syndication") is a family of web feed formats used to publish frequently updated works—such as blog entries and news headlines-- in a standardized format. Although RSS formats have evolved since March 1999, the RSS icon ("
") first gained widespread use between 2005 and 2006 and we RSS is quite simply a method of displaying frequently updated contentuse this icon throughout the church website to link to the feeds. RSS is quite simply a method of displaying frequently updated content and we use them to broadcast announcements about events, and opportunities in our different ministries. We have a “Master” RSS feed that includes all the feeds in one and we also have individual feeds for different ministry categories. You can view these feeds, most commonly with any recent web browser, by loading the feed address which allows you to view its contents. If you are unable to get an RSS reader running the most recent news will be posted on our homepage and a full historical log can be accessed, and searched, under the “Services/Events” menu under “Events.”
RSS can also be used by other programs such as Outlook and even specially designed RSS readers, like the one inside of Facebook. These RSS readers are designed to update your feeds without ever having to open up the website. You just automatically get the news that you want… when you want it. We have put together a few examples on how to use the RSS feeds below:
- Internet Explorer 7/8: Check out this Online Tutorial on how to add RSS feeds to Internet Explorer's Favorites Bar.
- Outlook 2007: Here is a tutorial on how to add RSS feeds to Outlook 2007 directly.
- Outlook/Outlook Express: Looking to add RSS for an older version of Outlook or Outlook Express? Check out RSS Popper.
- Facebook: Facebook has built in functionality to add RSS feeds to your wall, check this out.
- Android based phone: from the "Market" area download an app called "PureRSS". Add one of the below feed addresses from the "Add Feed" system menu.
