The Promise - A
Michael Card Concert
Evangelical Free Church of SLC -
December 12 @ 7 pm
Michael Card describes The Promise as an attempt to revive the story of the nativity and to “look at it in a fresh way.” He explains, “The problem with Christmas is that it’s all so familiar. What I’m trying to do is make that experience new.” More than just recounting an oft-told, but rarely understood story, he presents the characters in a thought-provoking and challenging way – inviting the listener to encounter their timeless truth.
To do so, Card strives to capture what each player in the account must have felt about his or her role in that world-changing event. “What Her Heart Remembered” expounds on the things that Mary pondered in her heart. In trying to relate to Mary and her experience as a young mother, Card talked to his wife about her memories of mothering her newborn children. In “Joseph’s Song,” Card conveys the overwhelming impact of becoming both a first time father and having as his son, the Son of God. He describes the amazing scene when the Messiah’s birth was first announced to common shepherds. “I’m trying to make the point, which isn’t usually made very well during Christmas, that the shepherds were outcasts,” he says. “They were looked at like garbage men. The fact that the very first Word would have come to them is pretty stunning.”
Card’s work includes a musical legacy which spans more than a decade and has earned him thousands of loyal listeners. He has received numerous awards and accolades, and has written such classics as “El Shaddai”. With a master’s degree in biblical studies from Western Kentucky University, he has always taken a scholarly, thematic look at the Bible through his music and has completed musical trilogies on the life of Christ and the Old Testament. |
